Super Bowl Cocktail - Ward Eight (Boston)

To represent Boston (The Patriots), I decided to go with a classic cocktail - the Ward Eight.  The first time I had it, was back in October of 2010.  I was barely getting into cocktails at the time and this drink became an instant favorite.  Though it is made with Rye or Bourbon, it is remarkably refreshing.  I think it was then, that my love affair with bourbon began.  Suddenly, with a taste of the Ward Eight, I no longer saw this spirit as being confined to stiff drinks.

I always admired bourbon for it's manliness.  Similar to beer, it's a man's drink - a man's man drink.  No femininity about it.  Straight-up, hardcore and in your face!  But every now and again, you just have to slow down a bit.  You can't go full-throttle all the time or you'll end up with a bottle of brown paper-bagged cheap stuff out on the street.  And more than not wanting to be living out on the streets, you definitely don't want to end up drinking bottled brown paper-bagged cheap stuff...while living out on the streets.

With the Ward Eight, the harshness of the bourbon is restrained but still very present.  Subdued, if you will.  Tamed even.  It's not in the background and it doesn't play second fiddle to anything here.  It just allows all of the other ingredients to share the stage.  Consider this cocktail as "Bourbon taking the day off, Bourbon in a good mood, Bourbon on idle, Bourbon playing nice, etc."  You get the picture - Now see my pictures!  Cheers.

Rather than use plain ole oranges, I kicked it up a notch with some Honey Mandarins.

Remember me?

The Ward Eight - Now tell me that don't look refreshing!
