Rogue's Voodoo Doughnut

Nice concept but would it translate into a good beer?

Unfortunately, this gimmicky brew didn't deliver for me.  That's not to say that it can't work.  In this instance, however, it simply did not.

The first thing you'll notice is the maple aroma when you crack the bottle open and pour yourself a glass.  What starts out promising quickly loses steam after your initial sip.  The only bacon aspect you taste is the smoke.  I was hoping for some porkiness but that was completely absent from this beer.  This might as well just be labeled as a smoked beer but even then it wouldn't be a good one.  Voodoo Doughnut had no balance to it whatsoever.  I had to struggle to finish this beer - only because I paid $10 - $12 for it.  I wouldn't hesitate to try another bacon maple beer because I think it is possible to brew a good interpretation of this classic combination - but I just wouldn't want to try Rogue's rendition of it again.  Good on paper; bad in this bottle.

  1. I can't believe you slurped it all up and didn't save me some! Malo!

  2. Next time YOU can slurp it all up! Then, we'll share a beer. ;-)
