Bar l Kitchen (Los Angeles - Downtown)

Bar l Kitchen.

Starter Bread.

El Abuelo.

For the record; I did not ask for something "cool."  But, I found it hilarious that my drink order went to the bar that way.

Bone Marrow.

Chicken Confit.

My Burger with...

...obligatory [crack] Truffle Tots.

Green Flash's Double Stout.

Shrimp and Grits.

A shot of Sherry - for the Bone Luge, of course!

Thanks for volunteering, Lizzie.  You were a good sport!  I hope you'll come out with us again really soon - conventional shots next time (if any).  ;)

Phlight (Whittier)

Complimentary almonds and olives.

The beer list.

The selection is good and since I saw they had Noble Ale Works, I just had to try it.

Beer & Sangria.

Noble Ale Works has been on my short list of local breweries to visit.  I never had beer from there so this was my introduction.  I got their Imperial IPA and Lilly opted for Sangria.  We both agreed that it was thinned out too much but we liked that the drink came with chunks of fruit.

Bacon Wrapped Dates.

 'Nuf said.

Sweet Potato Fries.

Wait, this aint Spanish!

Mac n Cheese.

This "small plate" had artichoke hearts, capers n some porky bits in it.  No mention of it was made on the menu so I was pleasantly surprised.  I wish the sauce had been creamier though.

Garbanzo Cakes.

This was my least favorite dish.  I was hoping for something more along the lines of croquettes.  These were soft and dusted with far too much paprika.

Oskar Blue's Old Chub Scottish Style Ale.

My word! I was surprised when I tasted this.  The only other beer I had tried from Oskar, is Dale's Pale Ale and Mama's Little Yella Pills.  While I think Dale's is the quintessential Pale Ale, I couldn't care less for Mama's.  What can I say, I dislike pilsners and lagers.  After tasting Mama's, I wrote off Oskar Blues.  But now, I'm more curious than ever.  I just visited their site and found another dozen or so beers I wanna try.  it was nice meeting you again, Oskar.  See you soon.

Empanadas with a beef filling.

These weren't the best empanadas I've had, but they weren't shabby either.  The crust was flaky and the filling was moist.  The tomatillo sauce was pedestrian.  I wanted a spicier sauce.

 Fish Tacos.

The sauce here was better (spicier) but I don't think it went well with the taco and I hate that the fish tacos came with sour cream.  The fish was moist but then again, so was everything else.  I had to eat this with a fork and knife as it would not hold up.

Grilled Corn on the Cob.

Ya, this aint Spanish either.  But I didn't care!  I love sweet corn - especially street corn.

It wasn't either of our birthdays, nor did we pretend it was.  We didn't order dessert and even if we had, I assure you, flan would never be something I would order.  I have nothing against it but it's too mundane for me.  That being said, the flan was good - very good in fact. Our server told us it was on the house but I have no idea why.  I didn't care.  Thanks server.  Thanks Phlight.

The emblem on the drink menu.

Some dishes were hit or miss but the service was solid and I liked the beer list.  I would like to return one day and try some of the other plates they have.  One that immediately sticks out in my mind is their deconstructed pozole.  Another, which they recently took off the menu (but will return) is a crispy lentil salad.  The neighborhood is very homey with plenty of cool little shops to check out (including a wine/beer shop) so a return visit seems to be in order.

Rivera (Los Angeles - Downtown)

La Floridita #3

I wasn't aware of Constantino.  I prefer Caña.

Flor de Jerez.

Part 2 of the Fall Menu.

Autumn Sour (again).

Part 3 of the Fall Menu.   I don't know why, but Iwanna try the house-made avocado soda.

I've been fortunate enough to sit at the bar the last couple of times I've come in.  But damnit, I still have not met Julian Cox.  One day!  I'd like to pick his brain.

More cocktails.

Sazerac aka "El Maton" - Jessie.

Zengo (Santa Monica)

An addendum to the cocktail list.

Lagunitas IPA.

The main reason I keep returning - Edamame, XO Style.

Although, it's my second favorite dish here (the Hanger Steak is tops), it came out a little salty and overcooked.  Tisk tisk tisk.

Ceviche Dorado.

Chinese Long Beans with Mushrooms.

Xingu's Black Beer.

I was surprised to find that Brasil makes such a thing.  It's not exactly a stout or porter.  The only similarity is the color, head and chocolate/coffee notes.  This black beer is actually quite light with little carbonation.  Interesting but enjoyable.

 Crunchy Calamari Salad.

I had this before and didn't really care for it.  This time around, I did.  Go figure!  Good pick, Lilly.  Good pick.

Cusqueña Premium Malt Lager.

I'm not sure what roll we got but it was decent.

Pork Belly Steamed Buns.

A look at the patio outside.

If you ever eat here, make a reservation for the patio overlooking the promenade.  Good stuff.
